Definiçãode Ya me esta gustando más de lo normal. vs Ya me esta lo gustando mas que normal are both correct¿ The second one is not correct. You could say: Esto me está gustando más de lo normal.|"Más de lo normal" is a fixed expression. "Lo" isn't a direct object pronoun here. And "gustar" is an intransitive verb; so, no direct object. |@CharlieFoxtrot No, it doesn't make sense, the
lo bueno means what is good or what is a good thing lo tierno means what is tender lo estúpido means what is stupid lo sano means what is healthy. Bueno, tierno, estúpido, sano etc. are adjectives. To make an adjective "become a noun " we can use "lo". No fumar es lo sano. Lo sano es no fumar. Both mean "Not smoking is a healthy thing or Not smoking is what is healthy. Lo bueno que él tiene es que es inteligente. What is good in him is that he is intelligent. Siempre hay que ver lo lindo. You must always see the nice things or You must always see what is nice. Lo malo en tu redacción es que es muy corta. What is wrong with your composition is that is is very short. Ya me está gustando más de lo normal. I'm liking something, someone more than what is normal. Remember the subject is something or someone so it' s third person singularestá gustando and not I estoy gustando A 'literal' word for word English translation would then be... "Already, to me, it is pleasing, more than what is normal" ...? - Joe1242, AGO 11, 2017maybe but it sounds weird in English - polenta1, AGO 11, 2017Haha yes.. I like to do that so I know how everything being said in Spanish contributes. This way I don't have a lingering question, "what was that 'lo' for?". Of course we would never say it that way in English. - Joe1242, AGO 11, 2017You might be right. It's you strategy, your trick. I prefer to read or hear the "correct" way repeated, always listen or read the right example. - polenta1, AGO 11, 2017I've been doing a bit of both. With short phrases I find the approach of just knowing what would be said in proper English works really well, but with full sentences I tend to need to know more. I like to get into the grammar when its more involved. - Joe1242, AGO 12, 2017If you think of gustar as to please, which is the exact translation, it will cause less confusion. Ya me está gustando más de lo normal ... It is now pleasing me more than the usual / normal. Lo normal is used as "the usual thing". We use this pronoun in these cases to indicate things that are spoken or things that are not spoken but understood to the point of being something abstract, ie Vamos a hablar de lo de ayer Let´s talk about the thing that happened yesterday. ¿Arreglaste lo del coche? Did you fix the thing on / condition of the car? With the proper translation, está is completely understood. - FELIZ77, AGO 11, 2017Enjoy the song! Our teacher played it in our lesson and recommended we listen to it to improve our pronunciation. I don't know how good your Spanish is but gustar can function in 3rd person as ' it is pleasing to me' which in English we translate as I like. Lo + adjective is a common form. It's normal that's normal the norm etc. Here is an article about it A lo + In the end songs fit the mood and the tempo so are not always grammatical. Enjoy it. I saw the link. It's very nice but it's about A plus lo and not only lo. A lo loco, a lo necio etc. - polenta1, AGO 11, 2017I know I should have explained it better. It is a site I like. - Mardle, AGO 11, 2017I remembering learning about Picasso and one of his painting phases was known as lo Azul. - Mardle, AGO 11, 2017of course. Lo azul. My mother had a reproduction of one of his paintings " de su etapa azul". - polenta1, AGO 11, 2017Hello Joe, Welcome to our Spanishdict community forum Julian, Ken and Mardle have already given you very good answers concerning the grammar so I am not going to add anything in that respect but I will pick up on a point that Ken mentioned about the priorities of a lyricist! Joe, when Spanish natives write songs they use a lot of colloquial and idiomatic Spanish and as Ken rightly says their main priority or concern is not to follow precise rules of grammar, but to communicate their ideas in a clear but poetic way that people can relate to and understand! The lyrics flow much more easily this way, the public can more easily relate to the ideas they are communicating as they are expressed in the every day language of the people, rather than sounding like something written in a text book for grammar! Doing it in this it much more likely that people will remember the lyrics, start singing them and buy the artists' songs! As a musician I tried writing a love song in English just for fun many years ago when I was much younger and although I never intended to publish it, it was an interesting experience. You usually have to play around with the lyrics until you get them more or less as you like them ....it is not an exact science! lol If you or anyone were to try to write a modern song - especially a love song - using precise rules of grammar it would probably end up sounding terribly stilted and lacking in feeling, and the lyrics would not flow easily! I am sure that professional songwriters/lyricists start off by writing down ideas as they come to them to keep the flow of creativity running smoothly! Later in the process after playing around with the word order they finally end up with the song in a form that communicates more or less what they want to say in their own style ....but communicating ideas that their audience can relate to in a literary creative style that is, communicating the idea in a poetic way and successfully selling it always takes precedence over following exact grammar! I hope this will help you and others here to better understand about the literary style of songs and not to try to translate lyrics too literally! so... a musician? - polenta1, AGO 11, 2017Yes, I play the piano as my job I play by ear! - FELIZ77, AGO 11, 2017Of course, but as someone who is still learning the language, how am I supposed to learn the difference if I don't ask! - Joe1242, AGO 11, 2017I am a songwriter myself so I know this all too well! Thank you for your response - Joe1242, AGO 11, 2017 Can someone help me with the grammar here? What is "lo" functioning as? Can someone give an exact translation? And "está"? The standard translation goes... "already I’m liking it more than normal". Shouldn't this be... "Ya estoy gustando" If you haven't figured it out yet, its from the song "despacito"... Gasp!!! I learn so much from songs in Spanish, but only when someone can explain it... Thanks for helping! smile The most significant thing I can tell you is ,,, stop trying to reconcile song lyrics with proper grammar. It doesn't always work. Just try to capture the overall meaning of the lyrics. When composing song lyrics proper grammar is a very low priority. Will it sell 1 Does it sound good 2 It the general idea conveyed 3 Is the grammar according to the RAE 999 Great advice about not reconciling lyrics with correct exact grammar, Ken - FELIZ77, AGO 11, 2017I'm a professional musician ...Just so you know I will be asking more of these questions in the future. I still think its a great way to learn when things are correct, or slightly bending the rules for artistic reasons! - Joe1242, AGO 11, 2017Well Joe, I think I agree with you Great...if you are an advanced student I look forward to your next contribution - DilKen, AGO 11, 2017And even if you're not an advanced student, since music lyrics are obviously very close to your heart, if it's something you enjoy doing...go for it! Doing what you enjoy is probably the most important thing to keep motivated. - DilKen, AGO 11, 2017I have been studying for about 4 or 5 months now.. I should have known about 'está' here, in fact I did but the 'gustando' threw me. But the 'lo' construction was totally new to me. Thanks! - Joe1242, AGO 11, 2017
